Chapter Updates from Beta-IotaSigma Phi Delta Beta-Iota Spring Newsletter

Happy Summer everyone! Welcome to Sigma Phi Delta Beta-Iota's Newsletter for the 2019 Spring semester. This newsletter includes the activities and events that our chapter has been involved with during the past few months.

Chapter Updates

It's been a great semester for our chapter! We grew to 60+ active members this Spring and are excited to welcome back 54 members in the coming Fall. This semester we crossed 17 new members in our Xi pledge class (pictured below). That's a record number for our chapter and we're happy to welcome these new members to our brotherhood. We've stayed busy with resume critiques, a date auction with AOE, volunteering with FIRST, and many other events including those below.

Freshman Book Scholarship
Our chapter awarded a $300 Freshman Book Scholarship to undergraduate student Jordan Foster. Over the last few years, Jordan has achieved good grades and has earned impressive high school and college GPAs. Outside of the class room, Jordan is involved with club fencing, Code Black, and has attended hackathons at Yale University, UPenn, and George Washington University. We are happy to support Jordan and wish him the best of luck!

Charity Service Auction

On March 2nd we held a Charity Service Auction benefiting Days for Girls International. The event raised over $1200, making it one of the highest-grossing philanthropic events in chapter history. Brothers volunteered their services, like cleaning, tutoring, or car repair, which were auctioned off to the highest bidder. The event was held in Stamp Student Union’s Colony Ballroom and boasted near-100% brother participation..

Alumni Professional Development Talk
Thank you to the 8 different alumni who joined us in person or online to offer their words of wisdom on how to succeed in the job hunt and in the workforce. This was a great opportunity for our younger members to network and learn from our experienced alumni. If you are an alumni and are interested in participating in a similar event in the Fall semester, please contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. Bitcamp Hackathon Partnership

Thanks to the initiative from brother Alex Brassel, in April we partnered with Bitcamp, a 36-hour hackathon with over 1,000 participants, to create a prize category for innovation that improved user's mental health. During the event, brothers mentored teams and helped judge submissions. The winners of our category created a tool to track patient's emotions through social media text analysis and machine learning. Mental health issues are especially relevant to college students and it was great to hear the ideas of the 25 teams that submitted entries to our prize category.

Away Weekend

This Spring our brothers drove to Duck, North Carolina for our fraternity Away Weekend! Including brother's dates, we had over 80 attendees, including some great alumni. We spent the weekend swimming, playing games, and enjoying time on the beach.
